Students: When learning about compassion, students are learning about other cultures as well as their own. They are learning to be kind and empathetic to others while gaining respect for themselves. For a student to be compassionate, they must be secure and happy. When students help others or show acts of compassion, they gain confidence and an appreciation for themselves. This allows the students to become
connected with themselves and demonstrate an understanding of appropriate ways to express their feelings.
Classroom: Teaching compassion in the classroom is very important as it helps build a class community and healthy relationships amongst the students. The student's learn to appreciate, co-operate and include each other. This strengthens the students opportunity to benefit from co-operative learning and group work.
Community: When students understand the importance of having compassion, they are able to identify and
look through different lenses and perspectives. Teaching compassion allows the students to learn about other cultures and personalities in their community and throughout the world. The students learn how to be understanding, non-judgmental and accepting of different cultures and lifestyles. As well, they understand how to care for their environment and be a part of their community.
Family: What students learn at school gets brought into their home life. When students learn about compassion, they are learning how to connect with not only their classmates but with their friends and family as
well. Compassionate students are able to identify thoughtful and caring behaviours in families and therefore are able to act accordingly. The students learn how to provide their families with support and demonstrate nurture,
guidance and love towards them.

The Effects of Compassion
"Compassion changes everything.
Compassion heals.
Compassion mends the broken and
restores what has been lost.
Compassion draws together those who have been
estranged or never even dreamed they were connected.
Compassion pulls us out of ourselves
and into the heart of another,
placing us on holy ground
where we instinctively
take off our shoes
and walk in reverence.
Compassion springs out of
vulnerability and triumphs in unity."
